Infections double in Switzerland

Coronavirus cases across the country have doubled in the past week and there are fears hospitals will soon be full and contact tracing will collapse.

The Federal Health Office says it’s closely following what’s happening in other countries and is examining the so called ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown which has been imposed in Wales – which has a far lower infection rate than Switzerland of 120 per 100,000 - this country’s average is running at 340.

But the chief economist at the business association, EconomieSuisse, says any lockdown will be economically devastating.

Canton Valais is proving to be a coronavirus hotspot – which threatens the winter holiday season.

The latest numbers show Valais has the highest infection rate in the country with 755 per 100,000 people.
