Warning UN human rights lawyers
UN human
rights lawyers warn against new anti-terrorism law
UN human
rights lawyers are warning a new Swiss anti-terrorism law being discussed in
parliament would be illegal if passed.
The UN’s
High Commissioner of Human Rights says an article in the bill which allows for
preventive detention would fall foul of the European Convention on Human Rights
and the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child as it applies to those over
the age of 12.
The section
of the bill was not proposed by the Federal Council, but has been added by
parliament.
A letter
from the UN to the Swiss Justice Ministry says the wording of the bill is too
vague and could lead to arbitrary detention.
